News: Bake Perfect Packs for Bird's Eye

The Bake Perfect Bag makes a perfect fish meal simplicity itself, straight from freezer to oven.

These striking and innovative packs for freezer-to-oven fish portions are constructed from a strip metallised PET/PET laminate and form an integral part of a major product launch for Birds-Eye/Iglo, called in the UK ‘Simply Bake to Perfection’ and meeting a clear consumer need. Consumer research carried out by Birds-Eye revealed that customers are often wary of cooking fish because they are not confident of cooking it safely or properly. The ‘Bake Perfect Bag’ provides an important reassurance in the kitchen, helping to overcome significant barriers to consumption.

The consumer opens the product carton revealing the silvered inner pouch, creating a sense of occasion. The strip laminate displays the upper surface of the fish, typically including an appetising swirl of flavoured butter. The laminate packs are designed for oven cooking from frozen.

While the bag allows the fish to cook in the butter recipe, leaving a delightful flavour and extremely succulent fish, laser perforation enhances customer convenience, the pack automatically venting steam through the cooking process so the customer does not need to pierce or otherwise prepare the pack. This is important both from safety and food quality perspectives. By pre-perforating the film, the customer does not have to use a sharp knife, with obvious safety benefits. Additionally, the degree of perforation is tailored to control the amount of steam that is allowed to escape, maintaining the perfect cooking environment inside the pack. This retains moisture and therefore enhances the succulence of the fish, adding value to the product by making it taste great! Cooking instructions are also printed onto the film pack.

The Birds-Eye Simply Bake to Perfection range of five products is the UK element of a Europe-wide launch, with the majority of the packing taking place in Germany and Holland. The laminate is supplied on a reel to be packed in both high-speed horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal machines and features a heat seal coating on the inner surface so that the pack can be sealed quickly.
