News: FFP Rise To The Packaging Challenge

Marks and Spencer has just launched an exciting new range of speciality breads, with a little help from FFP Packaging Solutions.

The new loaves are very high quality, some hand made, and it was important that the packaging reflect this “deli-style” sophistication. M&S therefore designed a printed flow wrap with a large label applied to the front of the pack to make them really stand out on shelf.

It was difficult for the packers to position the labels onto the packs once the bread had been flow-wrapped. Because the loaves are all slightly different in shape and size, it was not possible to get the consistency of label alignment that M&S demanded.

FFP has recently installed a new label application line, and by working closely with one of M&S’s packers, Gunstones, a solution was developed whereby FFP printed the film and then applied the label to the printed film before it was supplied. That way the label can be applied exactly in the right place on every pack with no risk of creasing. All the packers involved then received the labelled reel of film to flow wrap the bread exactly as if they were using their usual packaging material.

M&S were extremely happy with the solution. As Fiona O’Hagan, Product and Packaging Co-ordinator, put it: "Within the bread category, this has been a major launch for us, and the solution FFP developed helped make sure that it went perfectly and we hit the launch date."
