Flexible packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables
The desire from people to maintain a healthy lifestyle and with consistent messaging both on pack and through the media to eat ‘5 a day’ it is not surprising that the fresh food sector remains buoyant.
Thanks to product packaging and a robust supply chain, we can now import produce all year round from all over the globe to keep supermarket shelves stocked 365 days a year with fresh produce.
Packaging plays a vital role in the supply chain, protecting food from environmental conditions, physical damage and maintaining product freshness. No matter where the product ends its journey; either on supermarket shelves, in the food service, at a wholesaler or in food production, packaging is required to ensure products arrive safely, stay fresh and avoid food waste, which in turn can have a negative impact on the environment.
The sector is also driven by consumer desire for fresh produce to have extended shelf life without compromising on taste and texture. With busy lifestyles, interim ‘top-up’ shops during the week are becoming unrealistic which is developing the consumers desire for products with extended shelf-life. Packaging techniques and materials can assist in achieving this.
FFP have supplied packaging to the fresh food sector for many years, winning awards for innovation in the development of recyclable packaging solutions. Many different packaging formats can be found in the fresh food aisles of the supermarket; from resealable pouches of prepared fruit to microwaveable and ovenable potatoes and vegetables, the fresh food sector has extremely varied packaging needs. Materials can be required to have resistance to humidity, permeability to gases and odours and a higher barrier to water vapour. FFP’s technical team will advise and assist in selecting the correct material with the necessary barrier for your product requirements.
FFP solutions for the fresh food sector include:
- Stand-up pouches
- Pre-made bags
- Resealable packaging
- Lidding film
- Flow wrap
- Cold seal
Sustainability in packaging is increasingly becoming a key requirement for brands and FFP have responded by developing 100% recyclable solutions that can be collected now through current waste streams and that lend themselves perfectly to the fresh food sector.
FFP have developed ‘Esterseal’, a resealable PET lidding film that has been designed to be used with a PET tray to produce the first resealable pack in the UK to be classified as Recyclable by OPRL and collected in its entirety through the pots, tubs and trays kerbside collection system. Esterseal is already having a huge impact on shelf in the fresh food sector, providing consumers with outstanding convenience and ease of recycling.
Our all PE laminates are also demanding shelf space as they can be recycled with carrier bags at supermarkets and can be supplied as pouches, pre-made bags, sachets and film on a reel. They can be supplied with a PE zip to address resealability without compromising on recyclability and they can be provided with a high barrier, running smoothly on packing lines with no need for capital investment and modifications.
